Ok..the answer is no. It will not work without the connector.
It flashes 4 LEDs which indicates the processor is improperly installed.
So..that power connector is not just for stability.
Without it the damned processor won't power up ;-)
So..I'll be off hunting tomorrow morning for a brand new power supply
tomorrow :-\
I'm more than a little disappointed that after two hours of work, I got
no machine to turn on.
