Larry, I'm not sure which approach you take.
But, I probably said elsewhere on this thread that I have a 'generic' letter which I customize based on the job description; I'm guessing you use a similar approach (or else there would be no customization needed). I'm a bit surprised at how many recruiter-folk said "I never read a cover letter." on this thread. I suspect that real employers react differently.
