Dear Jeff I think the best choice is still > sea_floor_depth_below_sea_surface for this quantity. John's vertical_distance idea could be a good one to adopt for other layer thicknesses, but this name would be consistent with existing names, and so it seems suitable. Also the surface is a natural reference level, more than other surfaces.
