I have the ODBC connector working with a SQL Server database in my development environment. It's the only way we have right now to connect to our SQL Servers as our DBA is loath to enable SQL Server Authentication. We run our CFMX service as a named domain account that has rights to the database. It works fine, albeit, there is very little load on this server and due to the config of the server, we do not load test on it.
Specs are CFMX Updater 2, IIS 5.0, Win2k Server (Standard), SQL Server 2000 with SP 2 applied. I think that the key here is running CFMX as a named user. I couldn't get it to work when it ran as system.
