We used to use windows media streaming (which is free) and got mixed results. We have since switched to flash (and we don't even stream but do progressive download). With flash 8's compression ratios we usually can get away with it, and our videos are meant to be played in order without skipping through (we usually post short 30 sec to 1 minute clips). If you need people to be able to seek within the video, there are several solutions for that. You can get flash communication server (expensive). You can use a CF/PHP script or lighthttp module to allow seeking within the stream. You can use Red5 as the server. I haven't tried any of these methods as we've had no need for them, but I can't imagine that it would be very difficult to implement. Other then being able to seek within the stream, are there any other benefits of streaming vs progressive download that I'm not seeing?
