ImageCR3 from Efflare.com It's not free but well worth the cost and better than anything else out there... free or not.
You do not need to calculate the proportions with imageCR, it will do it for you. There is a 'reisze' option that takes the format of 100x50 (width X height) If you want the WIDTH to be a specific size (say 50px) and the height to stay proportional you just use resize="50x" To set the height and let the width be calculated for you... x50 ....Pretty simple.
