Have had good luck with hardware load balancing from Coyote Point. We used client vars so that sessions weren't lost even when users were moved across 4-5 servers, but cookies should provide you the same behavior. Works especially well if you've got your uploaded files in a single shared resource accessed over UNC, as you've outlined.
