One more thing, and you'll probably not want to use this method, but I like it...........
you could scan through the data looking for single or double qoutes, which ever you find, change the value= to the opposite. So if you find a ", use ' in the html. This falls down when you have a value with both single and doubles in. It might be worth baring in mind if you know one OR the other will be used. As for why you've never come across it, there's no reason why you should have till it reared it's ugly head!
