umm...
conventions for optimal factoring, naming conventions, constrained
interconnections between components, well-defined private versus public
APIs, specification and documentation standards, manageable distributed
development, separation of presentation from logic from data-access,
well-controlled query-caching, excellent code re-use, maximum
readability/comprehensibility, easy integration between multiple
applications, etc.

Add to that some excellent associated methodologies and tools like
wireframing, devnotes, test harnesses, and a large, thoughtful community.

And a couple of useful Custom Tags.

I'm sure I've left out a few things.

But really, I'm interested about the scalability of Custom Tags. Do you see
this as an issue for Custom Tags in general, or are FuseBox's
CF_FormURL2Attributes and CF_BodyContent particularly problematical? If
Custom Tags themselves are a worry, then ColdFusion has some real problems.

Let me know if you have any gory benchmarks, etc,
Thanks,
LeeBB

If you get rid of the custom tags in Fusebox what do you have left? A
switch statement?

It's actually not true that FuseBox *relies* on Custom Tags. Certainly
there are a couple of tags that are commonly used, but while they are
certainly incredibly useful, they are not essential for FuseBox
development.
Not essential in the way the CFObjects' tags are, that is.

As for the scalability of FuseBox tags, that's an entirely different
matter, and I'd be very interested to hear about any problems you have
found.
