Thanks for being a voice of reason in this discussion, Barry.

You're so 100% right - people who bugger of buying through
"a friend of a friend of a friend who lives in the US" to save
x AU$/NZ$ in fact should keep their voices pretty much down
when it comes to topics such as "Why isn't my local Adobe
office not doing X/Y/Z etc ?" in the future.

Just looked up the "current" $ figures of that thread.

If the figure of US$1200 is correct, that (as of right
now) coverts to AU$1353. As the pricing of US$1200 is
without any sales tax, let's look at the actual cost of
importing a physical product with the value of US$1200:

Customs value (Cval)
1353.00

Customs duty (Duty) @ 5% of Cval
77.65 (Payable)

International transport and insurance or postage (T&I)
???, let's assume it's 50.00 dollars

Value of the Taxable Importation (VoTI) (Cval+Duty+T&I)
1480.65

Goods and Services Tax (GST) @ 10 per cent of the VoTI
148.07 (Payable)

Total payable Duty + GST
225.72

That means your REAL cost for importing the product are AU$1578.72
NOT including the assumed AU$50.00 for T&I (those have just
been used for the GST calculation). Oh, also don't forget
that if you pay with an AU credit card in the US, there
probably will be something like 1-3% additional foreign
currency use charges from your CC company.

I can't really say anything to the figure of AU$1700 which was
mentioned, but if the latter is true, we're not too far off
anymore, are we?

Oh, btw: Don't think you can fool the tax people with arguing
that you're not actually importing anything by downloading
stuff and getting an electronic license key. Both AU and NZ
have tax regulations for so called reverse GST charging and
duty in such a scenario, i.e. if you want to do it the proper
way and avoid any trouble with potential tax evasion in an
audit, you won't get around paying it :)

Look, I'm not trying to convince anyone to buy locally,
do whatever you think is right. But at least compare apples
with apples and do the maths before you jump on any
cheapish-sounding price in US$, really.

Cheers,
Kai
