As far as I can tell the alternatives are: 1) Put all cfcs in a single directory .. 2) Suck it up and use the full path .. 3) Spit in the face of best practices and use returntype="any". 
If you're working on your own and just starting with CFCs, I think you can just use returntype and type ="any" - i've thought about it from a variety of angles, and unless you are trained in a typed language and using type makes a lot of sense to you, i don't think you'll get much benefit out of trying to use type in CF. My personal opinion here. Using type in certain development environments or in very complex apps can certainly be advantageous, but i wouldn't rubber stamp using type as a best practice automatically.
