Hi Joseph, I'm neither an expert in J nor in APL, but I think both are well worth learning. If you want to focus on J I support Jan Pieter's list. From my personal perspective I want to point out especially these aspects:
- For me, as a beginner, the dissect tool has been invaluable in making transparent how J executes a sentence. I don't know about any analogous tool in APL. - I don't know why, but I'm really impressed by "under"(&.) and use it a lot in my programming. - Though Dyalog APL has a plotting package, I always felt it is quite complicated to use, while at least basic plots are quickly done in J (though this might be a question of personal style). - Depending on whether you plan to work with structured data a lot, Jd might be of interest to you. - Last but not least: I feel, that the J forums are a great place to be and I'm still impressed by the friendly, quick and high quality responses you get as a beginner from real experts.
