For development, you need IIS web app and the IDE. So you cannot expect to efficiently host the database on the same machine. Database interaction has enough latency to be equally accessed from an external machine; much better than eating the raw power of the same machine you working on with your app and IDE. Another workable combination is a sales demo machine with the app and the database, because its inconvenient to carry two machines to a demo. But it does not run the IDE, so its equally fine. The database can be hosted on a plain desktop server tucked off out of the way with a mimo-G or N wireless it should be fine to work comfortably with a laptop on a couch. If you tuck it under a hi-def TV and use Synergy to share mouse and keyboard of your laptop, you get a nice dual-head workplace. In breaks you can use the "media center" to watch YouTube clips or DVDs using the laptop as a remote. With Synergy and big enough 1080p screen you don't need VNC to control the media desktop.
