Guys,
when you are talking about tuning these carbs, you are talking only
about adjusting the fuel to air idle/low rpm mixture ratio right? I think I
was told that the "needles" used for adjusting the mixture at low rpms had
little effect at higher volume flows? Is that right?

I think I remember adjusting for maximum rpm at idle which was usually all
the way in and back out around a turn and 3/4? If the carb was functioning
properly and didn't need to be rebuilt. I remember the mechanic at the gas
station that showed me how to adjust the mixture and he showed me that I
needed to rebuild my carb because screwing them all the way in the engine
wouldn't die....or was it taking them out? I used to do this myself later
with a meter that showed rpms as well as showed me the points dwell.

I think the carb I had was a Rochester spred-bore Quadrajet. Man when you
kicked in them secondarys on the 389 I had, it was almost like downshifting
while hitting the gas (well... I might have done that a time or two as well
;). That front end would almost jump into the air when those secondaries
opened. I don't know much about Holley's but I never experienced one myself
that could have that drastic of an effect. Maybe they do.... but I will
only put a spred-bore carb on my car. Man what an experience.

Did Rochester and Carter merge?
