I've been using the Permatex "extend" product especially around the window pinch
weld areas where you get a lot of surface rust. You can prime or fill over that after it drys. Use a thin coat of body filler to level the area if it shows. Just try to fill the low areas and pock holes with a stiff spreader. That will save a lot of sanding. Than follow up with three coats of good primer and sand with 400 paper and sanding block to get your final level finish.
