I think a bunch of us
have done it. I have the Global West kit now. I first did the swap
to 11" brakes from a '79 F-body about ten years ago using the HO kit and
junkyard parts. That kit did not include upper control arms which made
alignment difficult and dramatically increased tire wear. In fact, the kit
was basically an offset bar, ball joints, and a few other parts. I got
calipers, master cylinder, and the proportioning valve from the Junkyard.
Get a new master - not much more expensive, and less trouble to replace when it
goes bad in a few months...
Now, you can buy a
complete kit from Hotchkis or GW and not even have to get your hands dirty in a
junkyard! I can also vouch for the improved handling. I've had the
car at Willow Springs and can pull 1G in the long sweeper. The Chevelle
was actually about the same as a Saturn and a Miata for overall lap times.
I had the power, but they barely had to touch their brakes and could whip
through the turns.
