If you're worried about being obnoxious, I wouldn't go with 40 series Flowmasters :) I just put them on my car and they're fine during the day, but they are probably a little obnoxious when I start the car in the neighborhood at 2 a.m. to leave somewhere.Definitely get 2.5" pipes over 2.25" with a 383. The Dr. X changes the sound of the exhaust, so make sure you listen to a car with one first before you spend the $$. I personally don't like the sound of the X. I have an H-pipe on mine. From what I have heard, the crosspipe keeps the exhaust from having that "pop pop pop" noise when you let your foot off the gas and the car slows down. The more you shorten the exhaust; i.e. turn downs after the muffler, the louder the exhaust is going to be. So, if you're wanting to quiet it more make sure you have the exhaust exit at the rear bumper.I prefer the exhaust to come out the rear rather than out the side. It seems more practical for a driver. That way when you're sitting in a drive through line next to a building with your window down, you don't get the exhaust bouncing off the wall and coming back in to choke you. Not sure it really matters too much other than personal preference and originality.Hope that helps... you also might try a search on the forums at http://www.chevelles.com/cgi-bin/forum/Ultimate.cgiRodney.71 ChevelleEl Mirage, AZ----- Original Message -----From: Ken's EmailSent: Monday, January 27, 2003 8:05 AMSubject: [Chevelle-List] Muffler and Pipe recommendations for 67 ChevelleI have a 67 Chevelle Malibu with a 383 stroker engine, 625 Carter AFB Competition Carb, Headers. I am thinking of changing exhaust system. Somewhat confusing. I want something loud, but not obnoxious.
I have heard the following:
- 2.5 inch pipes throughout with either Flowmaster 40 or Flowmaster 50 Series, or Dynomax mufflers.
- Use a Dr. X crosspipe.
- Have the pipes exit the rear bumpers.
Question 1: Go with a 2.5 inch or 2.25 inch pipe ?
Question 2: Does crosspipe quiet the sound or what else does it do ? Have a 3 inch piper from headers into crosspiper with 2.5 to mufflers, etc ?
Question 3: Should rear pipes exit bumper or turn out past the rear tires ?
Again, I want it loud, but not a cherry bomb obnoxious loud, and not a police pullover loud. But not a Walker muffler no noise sound either.
Purpose of vehicle: A driver/cruiser. It won't be raced.

Ken,
Did
you consider contacting the tech guys at Flowmaster? I did and they were
very knowledgeable and helpful. I was going to go with 40 series on the
396 but found out that they don't recommend them for big blocks; cracking and
popping and such. I'm using the 30 series, 2 1/2" pipes with a H-pipe.
Exhaust out the back with straight out pipes, not the turn downs that came with
the kit.
