Actually without the heads and everything else I removed, it was pretty
light, considering. All there was to lift was the smallblock, crank,
pistons, and the minor internals. I'm poor here, gimme a break, and the
weather was foul here in Alaska, in the middle of December, so I was forced
to do it in my garage. I don't have any cross beams or anything to hoist
from. Anyway, I had her pryed from the tranny, and sitting up as high as I
could on a floor jack, before we attempted. As far as having room, there's
a ton! When you remove the headers, radiator, and all hoses, you can really
get in there. I wish I had taken pictures. True, I'll never have anymore
children, and I ruined my uniform that day, as I rounded up a few guys right
after work to do it, but we did it just the same. Be advised, I do not
endorse doing this, as it will cost you a testicle, but it does make a
knucklebustin' story. If anyone is interested, I broke down and rented a
cherrypicker to put the 383 back in! It was completely assembled at the
time, and even I know when I'm outmatched! HUAH!

Don't know how Sarg and the boys did it... But in my poor youth,, I would
bolt a chain to head bolts on each side and use a pipe run through the
loops..
one guy on each side sitting on the fenders .. Would lift the pipe t and set
the oil pan on a 2X10 the lay on the rad support and extended to the
ground,
acted like a sliding board.. Then all we dis was slid it to the ground. .
Yes it made a mess. I would drain the oil and remove the side block drain
plug if
I could...to minamize the clean up..
