Sometimes you don't know. You will find a lot of breeder/showers, who keep a
hopeful out of a litter, just to sell it once it is grown because it didn't
turn out the way they expected. You don't know most of the time, but experience
helps you have an idea of how it will turn out. But those who are selling as
pet quality have already noticed some trait that will not be show quality. Even
that sometimes can backfire. I have heard of breeders who let a pup go then
when it became an adult it became a show champion and the breeder wants to kick
themselves for not seeing the potential. It is not a 100 percent thing, it is
just a lot of luck, experience and guess work as well as a whole lot of hope.
:-)

I do disagree with the other person's response that a non show quality will not
produce show quality. I know of plenty of examples of a parent that had a flaw
that produced perfect show quality pups....

But how will you even know that until the puppy gets older? Some traits and
such don't show up right away

Thank you. That had me so curious. Another question if one or two pups
from the whole batch had a genetic flaw wouldn't they all carry it? Not saying
that is why these pups are pet quality just asking in general
It is not necessarily a genetic flaw. A puppy could have a longer nose than
judges like. Short noses are very trendy. Otherwise, the ears might not be at
the exact angle preferred by the judges. The bite may not align perfectly as
required for a show dog. All show quality dogs will have puppies that are not
show quality. In fact, most puppies will not be show quality.
