Pat,
When I got my first chi I researched the breed. Mostly their health and temperament to see if it would be a good fit for our family. I didn't look into  AKC standards because I wasn't going to breed. I knew my breeder was reputable and had bred chi's for 35 years.I never even asked the adult predicted size of my pets. It was more that I feel in love with one and said,"Let's make her a part of the family!"
                        Blessings,

I never even knew about AKC standards until I got my Tia.. then I found out that the chi's across the street that I loved so much were TOO big to meet the standards plus they were DEERHEADS.. it didnt stop me from loving them though.. but their owners moved out this week so I wont get to see them no more.. waaaah.. I could have given or taken the humans but I loved those fur babies.

Venus,
You know what bugs me?? Chihuahua's are the only breed I have ever seen obsess over a dogs weight!!
Would anyone say that dog is too big to be a Yorkie, or that can't be a Pekinese it is too heavy!! 2 lbs. or 10 lbs it is still a chihuahua!!
Perhaps it can't be a show dog but do people say," Oh that dog doesn't have a good top line, it
can't be a chihuahua." or, " Your dog is not a chihuahua, look at it's incorrect bite!"  Good grief, who does it matter to? I have small ones,
thin ones, fat rolly polly ones, but I'm not going to show them so who cares? Just love and enjoy their great
personalities. Next time if someone questions you say, " Oh your right it isn't a chihuahua it's a Great Dane,
just a little on the small size. A teacup Great Dane to be exact!"
             Blessings,
                      Sheila

Ok maybe I am wrong here but sometimes people really get to me.

I was at the pet store this morning with my three little ones... this
lady came over and was all ohhhh and ahhhh over them, then asked what
breed they where. Of course I replied Chihuahuas. She kept arguing with
me about it saying they are too big to be chihuahuas, that chihuahuas
can't be over 5 lbs.

Don't get me wrong.... all of my little ones are larger chihuahuas. Chip
is 7.2lbs, Dale is 10.5lbs... he is over weight and Gidget (my new
little girl) is 7.9lbs. I know both Dale and Gidget have a little bit of
weight on them they could lose but I don't think either of them would be
or look health under 5lbs. Both of them are on a diet weight now so we
are working to loss some of the extra weight. When Dale got fixed he
went from 7lbs to 12lbs, so far he has lost a couple of lbs. Chip on the
other hand looks skinny at 7.2lbs.

I am wrong that it is normal for chihuahua to weight that much.

Venus
