I have a Chiweenie and a full Chi...both bark at new people but neither has ever been aggressive other than the Chiweenie at my son...who originally got him from the shelter. We've never been able to figure that out. He's not aggressive against any other adult male and my son is good with dogs. When we did basset rescue if we got a basset who was afraid of men we gave him to my son who would within a few days get him ok with men. Also, when no one is watching, he has jumped into my son's lap...as soon as we notice, he growls and runs away. And he loves my DH.

We had 5 chis and 1 chiweenie during my childhood and 4 chis, 3 which have passed on, and the chiweenie weren't aggressive and none were trained. Although one that wasn't aggressive did not like it when kids got in her face and she would nip at them but I can understand that. The 5th one is protective of my mother. And Monster, my current chi, is protective of me, his food, and his toys. So, it depends on the chi and I think it also depends on how they are raised sometimes. When Monster started being protective of me as a puppy, my mom thought it was funny and would tease him by touching me while i was holding him. At that time I didnt think it would make him super aggressive because I'd never experienced that before but it did. I think obedience training and early socialization would be a good idea either way.
