Nancy, you are right...each one of us has to make our own decision as to what we feel is best for each of our babies. It is very unfortunate and sad for me to see Gigi this way. I was nervous about getting her spayed to begin with, and she weighs 6 pounds. Two Vets reassured me that she would be fine and that things have come along way using anesthesia and they now use different types for different breeds and weights. I have heard that they can also use gas, but I don't know anything about that, but you can google for it. I know of many chi's, not just in this group that have been spayed, the smallest that I know of personally is 4 pounds and they all did fine. It is a gamble, no matter which way you look at it.
I think for my Gigi, she was an exception to the rule, and maybe it hit her this way because she has been put under a couple of times before. The vets said that she had way too many sutures to have had only one c-section, plus she did have previous teeth removed. So maybe this was just one to many times for her tiny body to handle it. I don't know what I will do in the future, she doesn't have strong teeth for the ones that are left. That will be another bridge that I have to cross when the time comes. ♥ Peggy & The Girls ♥ -----Original Message----- From: Nancy Lucky <[email protected]> To: Chihuahuas <[email protected]> Sent: Sun, Nov 28, 2010 3:27 pm Subject: RE: [Chihuahuas] Spaying small dogs and brain damage from anesthesia Anesthesia always has risks - I had a penicillin shot once after I had them for years and came within seconds of dying. So there is risks in everything and we just have to weigh it out and what we think is best for you dogs. Of course of anything happened I would be devestated. Just like humans dogs will react differently. There is no reason a dog under 6 pounds can't be spayed. I have heard that if you don't spay them they can get uterine cancer and infections and all kinds of problems. I have had both my chi's spayed and neutered and it was all great. But now I have Maggie who I will have to decide on. So where do I find the facts on the brain damage information and the pros and cons.I have trusted and loved my Vet for the last 30 years but maybe I am blindsided.
