Once the weather gets cold here in Iowa Chico wears something 24/7 plus a coat when he goes potty outside. I've found that sweaters come off too easily too at night and the cats snag them anyway. I save his sweaters for trips to the vet and trips to my daughter's, etc. He uses stairs up to our bed (he sleeps under the covers with me when it's cold) and walks right out of them or gets stuck with them around his feet and can't move. What I've found that works the best are doggie sweatshirts that I bought a few years back at Petco. They look just like a sweatshirt you or I would wear and they hold up well plus stay on him.
