With Dolly, I would put her on the puppy pad about every hour…I think that I
had her smell the puppy pad before I put it down.  They have scent (that we
humans can’t smell) that must be like the scent that dogs leave when they pee.
When she went, there was big hoopla from me and a little treat.Desi was already
paper trained at the breeder, so he knew to go potty on the puppy pad.  He did
so well that he was allowed to be in many areas of the house and I had a puppy
pad in each room for the first week or two…but…Desi was too busy playing to
think about having to go potty and he started going potty wherever he was
playing…it was difficult to tell because he could, and still can, pee while
standing perfectly normal!  I did have a tough time getting him totally
trained. Both of mine go outside also.  Dolly will not use the puppy pad in her
area (since Desi used it once) and so it can be midnight and if we are still up
she will want to go
outside to go potty…Desi usually follows.I have two puppy pads in the master
bedroom because Dolly, who is going through ‘I am the Alpha’ period, will not
pee on the one that Desi did…quite funny because one uses the one puppy pad and
the other uses the other one.  The puppy pads that I have are very absorbant
and everything gels up almost immediately.  My dogs will use it several times
and when there is no more empty space I will put a new one down.  If they poop
on the puppy pad, I usually pick it up with toilet paper and flush it down the
toilet.  Every dog is different and so what works for me, may not work for
you.    I have heard that keeping the puppy on a leash at your side will help
also because the puppy can’t go anywhere without you and you won’t find
surprise patches all over your house before they learn the proper place to go.
Some dogs take longer for their bladders to develop control, so some obviously
take longer if
they have to go before they can get to the proper place.Good luck, and enjoy
the little ones…make sure you take and post lots of pictures.  From:

Subject: [Chihuahuas] Litter box and pad training a Chi    Next weekend we go
pick up our female Chi puppy and then a month later we
get to pick up the male...I so cannot wait.

We plan on litter box and pad training them since we want them to be
indoors. Anyone who has done this with their Chi if you could share any
tips I would appreciate it much.

Of course when the kids are outside they will be too. We live on base and
do not have a fence so I feel safer for them being indoor.
