Right, but there Firefox is wrong -- ctl-c should not affect the selection. Unless... Dan, here's a crazy thought: maybe on ctl-c we should grab the selection if you've done your don't-grab-the-selection hack, because now the user has acknowledged they intend for it to have the selection.
