Actually, there's a difference where you drag the text eg.
hotscripts.com

If you drag it to the tab strip, it won't work.

If you drag it to the Omnibox/address bar, then it will work.

So the next closest thing to opening a new tab with that link is:
right-click on your current tab and select "Duplicate", and then drag
the text into the Omnibox in the new tab.
