I'm considering switching from Gnome to Xfce, and haven't seen the "save" lockups thus far, so it could be a file manager issue. Xfce runs quite well with a smaller footprint, though of course it doesn't have all of Gnome's features. It has enough of them, and some nice ones I hadn't seen on Gnome.
