Dear David,

Many thanks for this - indeed it is the military aspect that I had in mind.

Any fresh material on that in _Monty - The Man Behind the Legend_ (1987) ?

As it happens, I was translating WSC's letter to CSC of 9 August 1942 earlier today. In it he comments on Gott's death and adds on Montgomery :

"If he is disagreeable to those about him he is also disagreeable to the enemy"
(p. 467 of _Speaking for Themselves_).

Some "disagreeability" . . . !

Thanks again,

A.C.

The Full Monty was a something of a re-write of the original 3-volume biography but which included material about Montgomery's homosexuality that Hamilton originally suppressed.

If what really interests you is Monty's military career, which after all is why he is significant, then the original books will do you just find.

Respectfully,

David Freeman

Dear All,

I must say I am lost between the various books on "Monty" by Nigel Hamilton.

Speaking only of UK editions, I understand that he first wrote a trilogy :

1-The Making of a General : 1887-1942 (1981)

2 - Master of the Battlefield: Monty's War Years 1942-1944 (1984)

3-The Field Marshal, 1944-1976 (1986)

But what about Hamilton's other offerings ?

The Full Monty (2001):
1-Montgomery of Alamein 1887-1942
2-The Impact of Fame, 1942-1976

&

Monty - The Man Behind the Legend (1987)

Are they extracted from the trilogy or do they contain unpublished material ? In other words, are they worth having if one already has the trilogy ?

No doubt some List Members will have a full set.

Thank you in advance for any enlightenment,

A.C.
