Some Months ago when someone offered to donate some RAM, I answered that I have sufficient hardware for myself. Now it it struck me and my laptop got broken a few weeks ago, this is quite depressing for me since I relied on working on the laptop alot and have problems to finance a new one soon.

It is somewhat frustrating that working on free software like Lumiera doesn't generate a little revenue to compensate some simple (*cough*) needs. My intention now is to check out if this is really true or if some people are out there who are willing to donate money or hardware to the project.

Even when Lumiera has nothing end-user useable yet, we already worked countless hours on managing the project, solid design groundwork, setting up the server, supporting people in tools we use, coding base libraries, a gui mockup, system interfaces and so on (ohloh.net lists Lumiera "Project Cost" already as $457,818, which admittedly is a gross overestimate, but still...).

This let me come to the Idea to "Just Ask!", maybe some Institutions, Companies or private Persons have faith in the Project and would like to help.

So the Questions are:
1. Would it be viable when developers (or otherwise involved people)
just speak up when they have some struggle to get some hardware (or
   even more essential needs!) financed?
2. Is there anyone out there who would give donations?

There are some important shortcomings:
 * It is very important that the other involved people should agree on
this. Everyone should have a good feeling that the reciever deserves
   the donation.
 * This results in that it should be transparent (I would set up an
website for this, donors might be pseudonymized on prefer).
 * We are a loose crowd of people, not some kind of Organization,
donations have to be arranged on a personal base, either by some kind
of contract or as private gifts. A donor won't get any tax benefit.

Comments?
