...if videojack was already there and mature enough to meet the
feature set of Cinelerra, then probably we'd go a similar route as
Ardour did for sound.
Last year, as our first planning started, I considered shortly to
create something new, which would be sort-of a jack-for-video, and
to build the whole App on top of it. But I must confess, I have a
deeply rooted distrust in generic, universal solutions. I always
get the feeling I can get along more smoothly and achieve much
more if I "know the locality" and consider the special situation
of a special problem.

In its current state, Lumiera is /not/ centred round the connection
metaphor. Also, it is quite deliberately /not/ an "real-time" App
for e.g. video DJing. Rather, the supposed use-situation is that
you work for weeks, months or even years on the post production
of some video feature or movie and will build up a large, convoluted
and detail-loaded session structure while going. Currently, the
central parts of the Lumiera engine (the GUI is just emerging) are:
- - an intelligent frame cache
- - a builder to do the actual wiring of processing nodes
- - a plugin/serializer for extensions and customisation.
Each of these parts is self-contained, but aware of the other
parts capabilities and able to make use of them to get ahead.

Cheers,
Hermann V.
