Hi Guys and of course Priscilla,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, long day at work and ive just
got in so i thought i would check straight away to find out what you have
all said.

Whew, thanks for all your inputs, i was going absolutely mad over this, Well
finally the penny dropped as i had forgotten to set the clockrate on the DCE
router!!!!

Now thats set though, i have managed to set up the connection using PAP, and
i finally managed to ping each interface though now 1 of the interfaces
keeps shutting down and is outputting the following message when using the
debug commands and seems to remove the route to the directly connected
interface:-

# debug ppp neg

05:46:49: Se0 PPP: Negotiation timeout, dropping connection

05:46:49: Se0 PPP: Phase is DOWN

05:46:49: Se0 IPCP: State is Closed

05:46:49: Se0 CDPCP: State is Closed

05:46:49: Se0 PPP: Phase is ESTABLISHING, Passive Open

05:46:49: Se0 IPCP: Remove route to 10.0.1.2

R9-1601R#

05:46:50: %LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface Serial0, changed
state

 to down

05:46:51: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface Serial0, changed state to up

05:46:51: Se0 PPP: Treating connection as a dedicated line

05:46:51: Se0 PPP: Phase is ESTABLISHING, Active Open

I am currently following the BCRAN Cisco Press book and i can't seem to find
the answers i am after when using PPP.

For instance, once PPP is established and the connection has been
authenticated if desired, will the link stay up permanently or is there
something preset that will shut the link down during inactivity,

The reason im stuck on this is that i can't see that it would be correct to
perform the "no shut" command to each interface before pinging eachother
just to test the connection.

Apologies if this is worded strangely, its the only way i could think of
putting it across!!

"jonathan" Cheers for your config layout - thats great.

My connection stays up permanently if i configure HDLC with no problems at
all, i just don't understand why the BCRAN cisco press book does'nt go into
PPP slightly further.

Cheers everyone

Regards

Matt
