Just to add to that, Pinnacle is the ASIC used on Cat 6000/6500 line
modules.  It contains all the port buffering (512K per port 7:1
transmit/recieve), conversion, QoS and backplane interface for up to eight
gigabit ethernet ports.  It has a 10 Gb/s (2.5Gb/s per port) interface to
the 16Gb/s data bus and 4 Gb/s results bus.  The Pinnacle is used along with
4 COIL (Constellation Input Output Logic) ASICs to provide 48 10/100 Mb/s
ports, at 12 ports per COIL.  The Pinnacle talks to the CAFE (Constellation
Advanced Forwarding Engine) much in the same function as the EARL in the
5000 series Catalysts.
