I was wondering if you can actually use a 2511/2509 as a frame switch by
getting the correct cable?  Anyone tried it?

2500s: fixed ports, slower, cheaper
2600s: modular ports, faster, more expensive

If you're only going to use the router in one role and you don't need the
performance, get a 2500. If you want to be able to use the router with
multiple interface types in multiple scenarios, get a newer more modular
router.

A 1700 with 2 dual-serial WICs should make a fine frame switch if you don't
need more than 4 serial ports.
