Thanks for your post as well as others..........

I have since got it working.

And it's hard to say why.  I asked a co-worker who had used this lab before
to suggest things.  We essentially wiped all the configs and started from
scratch.

It worked on the first attempt. (but I did that! - twice!!)

I was successful in getting vc's to work using the "old" way - using
map-list statements and the "new" way - using sub-interfaces.

I danced all around this and I'd swear that I had the same config at one
time or another - really, well - maybe not.
