Starting the days of coaxial ethernet (10Base2/10Base5) there was a
limitation per subnet of :
* five cable segments, connected by
* four repeaters, but only
* three segments coule be populated.
This hasn't been updated to 'modern day' technology of switches and
bridges (which change the rules somewhat).
