Hi,

VTP is a Cisco propiertary method of automatically
learning about other VLANs in the network dynamically.
It is not supported on the 3Com SS 1100.

Look at the docs at support.3com.com. The SS-1100 does
support 802.1q which is a standard VLAN trunking
protocol supported by many vendors. You should be able
to get a 802.1q trunk up between the 5000 and 1100
after looking at the docs at the above URL. The 1100
will not understand VTP however.

Hope this helps... if you any more questions feel free
to ask. I work with 3Com/Cisco/Bay/etc daily.
