Nope, good guesses though. This is as basic a config as you'll ever see.
PPP and IP were up and running on this link before I configured the IPX
network on the interface.

I'll provide another clue: I was able to configure an IPX network number on
the async interface, so IPX was up and running. It initially would not work
on this interface, though. Yet another clue: I was only able to reproduce
this if I performed the steps exactly in the order I mentioned. I'm at work
now so I don't have access to those routers but I'll recreate the config
here so you can see it.

I have R1 connected to R2 via the aux ports. Here is where I started (we'll
ignore the aux config, it's irrelevant here.)

R1 Config:

int Async1
 encapsulation ppp
 ip address 10.1.1.1 255.255.255.0
 async default routing
 async mode dedicated

R2 Config:

int Async1
 encaps ppp
 ip add 10.1.1.2 255.255.255.0
 async default routing
 async mode dedicated

At this point I tested IP connectivity using pings and all was well. I then
added a username/password to each router and configured CHAP authentication.
After configuring that on both routers, all was still well from an IP
standpoint. Then I did this:

R1:

ipx routing 1.1.1

int Async1
 ipx network deadbeef

R2:

ipx routing 2.2.2

int Async1
 ipx network deadbeef

I also configured loopback addresses on each router and a static SAP on R1
just to verify SAP and IPXRIP advertisements. These were not occurring as
expected. Doing a "show int a1" shows that only IPCP and CDPCP are open,
IPXCP is in Listen state.

So, the question really is why was IPXCP in Listen state instead of Open and
what might be a solution?
