Thanks James, that's a great easy link!! After reading that link and the two sample RIF's at the bottom I think I'm starting to get this stuff. I'm thinking the Cisco link that Michael ref. is wrong http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/100/46.html because it states the RD is 8 bytes, and not that the entire RIF is 8 bytes like you were mentioning.
