Jason,

Are you looking for a _cisco_ solution or are you just looking for an
inexpensive solution? If all you want is an inexpensive solution, there are
a lot of very low cost VPN solutions available, most of them are Linux
based. If all your engineers need is remote shell access, Secure SHell
(SSH) can be a low-cost option. If they need full system access you can look
at using VNC over ssh as another easy, low cost option. If you want a
full-blown encrypted tunnel, you can look at some of the following:

Zebedee - http://www.winton.org.uk/zebedee/ (runs on windows as well as
Linux)
Tinc - http://tinc.nl.linux.org/ (unix flavors only. Check out their links
section as well for other solutions)

All of this software is open source (i.e. free) and the cost at the head end
would only be that of a low-end PC, probably under $500 for a couple of
low-end pentiums.

HTH,
Kent

Unless the pix is really cheap, this might be a tough sell. We could do
it fairly cheaply already -- a 1720 at work with (free) Cisco vpn
clients to take home. But then they start saying at work, well, we need
a spare, and of course there is maintenance .....

the problem, frankly, is that this is not a mission critical function,
just something that would allow an engineer to provide level 3 support
to the NOC after hours ...

Thanks for the suggestion, though, I'll ask my SE

Jason
