you need to add logging facilites for messages in the syslog.conf file in
/etc/

research setting up syslog.conf on google. also do a "netstat -na"

you should see

/home/jbrunner as root@ns>  netstat -na
Active Internet connections (servers and established)
Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address           Foreign Address         State
udp        0      0 0.0.0.0:514             0.0.0.0:*


(this is syslog running, listing on 514 UDP)
