Hi, Unfortunatly i write something about that, but in french.. :)
To be short: Classification is the action for a network machine to say : - ok that packet (or frame) is an Ip one so it is classified in the Silver Class - this one a DLSW one so it is classified in the Glod Class - this a FTP on server 1.1.1.1 so it is classified in the Best Effort etc... Silver, Gold, Best effort or just classe without any effect for now. After the classification take place the work (only if the link is congested ;) for class Gold : the packet from this traffic will be forwarded first if the gold flow don't go over a 100Kbps limit (for exemple) for class Silver : the packet from this traffic will be forwarded for the gold flow have 50Kbps at the minimum for class Best effort : the packet from this traffic will be forwarded if the Gold flow and Silver flow left bandwith on the link Marking generaly take place after Classification (here classification mean some kind of recognition) and the value corresponding to the class type is recorded in the packet. So you have to make classification (and marking) at the entrance of the packet in the QoS enabled network.
