There are three configuration types

IOS
SET based (sometimes referred to as CAT-OS)
Menu

IOS and Set based switches are both CLI (Command Line Interface) which
means that you type commands at a prompt.

Some entry level switches (1900's?) have a menu based systems, and as
someone pointed out earlier, some models also have a CLI option.

SET based switches are usually the bigger Chassis based switches
(although not always).

SET based switches get their name from the commands you use to configure
them. For example, to set the port speed of an interface:

Set based:

set port speed 1/1 100

IOS based

Configure terminal
Interface Fastehternet1/1
Speed 100

Subject: Simple Question [7:61830]

I have a simple question.

I am confused about hearing about these three things:
1) IOS-BASED SWITCHES
2) CLI-BASED SWITCHES
3) SET-BASED SWITCHES

Now, can somebody very accurately classify what these mean and
categorise the common switches into the three groups?

Im not even sure if there are 3 groups or only 2. If its 2, then it
means that two of the above groups mean one and the same.

Thank You
Bill
