Larry & All --
It being a weekend -- and I have miles to mulch before I sleep --
I will just give my bird's eye response to the discussion so far
and save the more point-by-point commentary for Monday, Monday.
The larger problems that I see here are these:
1. Different perspective on exactly why projects like Nupedia, Wikepedia --
not to mention a host of others of my acquaintance over the past 7 years --
failed to achieve their lofty goals, despite the hints of promise they
showed.
2. The presence of largely implicit assumptions about organizational dynamics
and
group psychology that need to be examined with far more conscious
deliberation
than has yet to be done. It is past the time for ''a priori'' blue-sky
wishful
thinking on this score. The discussion of this factor needs to be carried
out
in the light of the masses of informal experience and formal research that
have
been accumulated in this area over the last 50 years, just that I recall,
along
with the poignant experiences that many of us have had with recent wiki
sistems.
3. In the effort to recruit researchers and scholars from academe and the
professions,
there is a need to understand the motivations and the needs of these
diverse groups,
along with the systems of roles and rewards that are already in place in
their day jobs.
4. If we don't want to keep sounding completely naive about many issues that
have been
undergoing fierce discussion on the intellectual scene, in and out of
academe, for
the last 50 years or so, then we need to catch up with the dialogue on
knowledge
that has been going on long before these groupware systems came on the
scene.
