This has nothing to do with LaTeX but with X11 (XFree or X.Org). It means that X11 can't find the fonts to be used for the xdvi GUI. I suggest you have a look in /etc/X11/app-defaults/ and see if there's a file for xdvi. Or you could make your own settings in ~/.Xresources or ~/.Xdefaults. The exclamation mark "!" is used to comment a line (just like the percentage sign "%" does for TeX). After some quick browsing, I found these lines in someone's .Xresources file: !XDvi.geometry: 880x1100+250-50 XDvi.shrinkFactor: 6 XDvi.paper: a4 ! True for .expert means no buttons. XDvi.expert: 1 XDvi.background: LightYellow ! XDvi.wwwBrowser: w3m ! XDvi.keepPosition: true ! In your case, you might try to fiddle with the "font" option. To know which fonts are available on your X11, try "xlsfonts" (you might want to pipe it to "less" or "more" because there's probably a lot of output).
