Yes.

No.  CJK.sty modifies the internal LaTeX command [EMAIL PROTECTED]@fontshape'
so that LaTeX itself tries to read a .fdx file after the .fd file.

No.  If you activate rotation, the default is to rotate everything.
Exceptions (this is, glyphs which actually have a vertical glyph
representation form) have to be explicitly enabled in the .fdx file.

The stuff in an .fdx file simply extends the definitions of the
corresponding .fd file.  There is no magic in it.  Have a look at the
macro [EMAIL PROTECTED]@fdx (in CJK.sty) to see how \CJKvdef and friends are
defined.

Not the subfonts itself, but the entries in the .fdx files so that the
