Hi Carolyn. I just had a bitch whelp a litter of 7 puppies Tuesday morning. Completely natural and with little muss or straining. I have one tiny one who was born at 4 1/4 ounces but all the rest were between 6 1/2 and 8 1/4 ounces. Funny thing was I had had progesterone pulled on day 5 before shipping her and when it came back the next day she was already at 3.3. So she was quickly shipped on her day 7 and bred that afternoon. She was bred by AI (breeder was out of town for first two breedings) on day 7 and 9 and then a natural breeding occurred on her day 9. Decision was made 3 breedings was ample. Thankfully we listened to the stud dog and not progesterone as she ended up whelping 65 days after the last breeding :o) And I still have one tiny baby!! She never nested hard but produced the first baby at 3:15am and the last one at 6:30am. Interestingly enough I did a tri x tri breeding (neither one being dominant tri) but was a little afraid of getting heavily marked tris and no blenheims. I ended up with 3 blenheims and 4 tris - all beautifully broken up in color and no close masks. Now the sex ratio isn't quite so "broken up" the boy gods were obviously in on the conception as I have 6 boys and 1 girl :o) Isn't the old wives tail that if you breed early - you get more girls? hmmmmmmmm One of the owners of the dog did tell me that they have had problems with bitches having big litters and not having contractions - so they often opt for elective sections. I haven't experienced that ........ YET :o) I have had 2 previous litters of 8 (but only 6 were born alive in each litter) but both were whelped normally. On all litters I have had the temp drop as an alerting factor.
