Checking outgoing mail is pointless. Why bother?
So you can reduce malware propagation? (And as a result, maybe not
end up on everyone's local blacklist for spewing garbage...)
It is still pointless and a waste of processing power.
I make outgoing email services available to a good number of people. I've no way
to know if their systems are zombies or well behaved. I just know that when they
send out mail through my systems they will not carry any cruft I'm able to
detect with the tools I have at my disposal. I don't consider it a waste of
anything - I think it's my job.
I've spec'd the system with this in mind. The system has nothing better to do.
It's not like it's maxed out trying to keep up with other requirements. It's a
mail server, f'crapsake.
It's really a shame there's no requirement to register ISP's and mail services
that don't, by policy, check the mail they spew out onto the Internet. It would
make my job easier.
