Well, since OPSWAT and Clean Access will have support for Security Essentials 4
(hopefully) soon, I created a registry key present check, and if that key is
present, the user passes the AV Def Rule (requiring up to date defs)

Registry Key: HKLM\ SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Antimalware\Signature Updates\
Exists

I know that this doesn't check to see if the defs are up to date, but it lets
our students get online during finals week.

We are using 4.8.2, and created a custom registry key check based on this post:

Microsoft updated Security Essentials to version 4 and this is not included in
the current module. We created a custom registry check and rule that looks at a
registry key for the version.

Registry Key:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Microsoft Security
Client\
Value Name: DisplayVersion
Value DataType: String
Operator: starts with
Value Data: 4.

We also had to create a custom registry key check to pass the AV Def rule.

Are others having issue with CCA recognizing Microsoft Security Essentials

having them install another antivirus?
