and now I'm a bit more certain - at the end of chapter 10 I built
bash-2.05b in /usr/local, symlinked that as /bin/sh, and the ppc64
glibc 64-bit tests all passed (no failure in c++-types-check).
Unfortunately, I then realised that I didn't know whether the
problem persists at the end of the build with the regular /bin/bash,
so I had to repeat using the bash we build in chapter 10. Again, no
problem.

So, it looks as if we need to apply the bash patches in chapter 6
(temporary system). Unfortunately, proving that means starting over
- before I do that I need to review ALL my build logs to make sure
no new failures have crept in, build a kernel and my minimal blfs
packages (ntp, nfs, chrony, ssh, nail, and so forth) and prove that
I can boot the new system. So, this is going to take some time.

I hope our esteemed Release Manager is ok with this, Jeremy ?
