 In fact, after I'd shut the machine down to go to bed, it became
blindingly obvious to me to do that :)  And guess what,
__powerpc64__ was defined in the 32-bit compile.  This morning, I've
taken a look at the logs and realised that for this test it uses
'gcc' instead of 'gcc -m32' !!!  I bet it works on fedora because
they default to the 32-bit version of gcc.

 I'll take a look at the Makefiles later.  Thanks for the
reference.
